Ani is off trying to get some vinefruit when she slips from the tree and gets tangled in the vines. Here she is captured by the governor's wardens and sent off for testing to see if she has the scourge, a plague. She is about to shipped off to the colony where all people with the scourge are sent never to return. As she is about to be loaded into the boat her best friend Weevil says he has the scourge too. What happens to two river kids will astound you with their pluck and courage. It is an awful place and one they should never have been sent too.
